LINKIN PARK's Chinese Record Label Slashes CD Price To Combat Piracy
August 5, 2003Warner Music China has taken more than two-thirds off the customary retail price of LINKIN PARK's new album, "Meteora", according to Billboard magazine. The goal is to lure fans from low-price counterfeit discs to the authentic product.
Warner Music China received permission from Warner Bros. in the U.S., LINKIN PARK's home label, and from the band's management, to offer "Meteora" at what it calls an "entry-level" price, says Huang Feng, international marketing manager for Warner Music China.
Most legitimate CDs from international artists are sold at retail for 60 to 80 Chinese yuan ($7.25-$9.65),based on a wholesale cost of 16 to 20 yuan ($1.90-$2.40). In contrast, pirated discs are sold for as little as 8 yuan (5 cents) but usually for 10 to 15 yuan ($1.30-$1.90).
